The Silver Tones Singers is the name of Manning Valley’s U3A Choir.
Commencing in 2009 with a small number of singers, it has grown in numbers and reputation over the years. Choir numbers have fluctuated around 50 men and women – mostly women. The choir always seems to be short of male bass and tenor voices and male U3A members are encouraged to join.
The choir learns a selection of wonderful songs from mixed genres each year. Songs are sung in unison, in two and four part harmony (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) as a full choir, separately as groups of men and women, and as soloists. They perform regularly at aged care facilities and at other venues, and raise funds for local charities through the presentation of two well-attended public concerts each year.
To the end of 2019 the total raised stands at $18,060 and the most recent charity was Manning Uniting Church community welfare programs. Other supported charities have been Can Assist, Taree Base Hospital Children’s Ward, Manning Valley Push for Palliative, Taree Women’s Refuge, Samaritans Great Lakes-Manning Homeless Support Service and Great Lakes Women’s Shelter.
The Silver Tones joined Kantabile Chamber Choir and the Manning Valley Choral Society to perform Schubert’s Mass in G as part of the 2018 Manning Valley Winter Festival. They were accompanied by Sinfonia orchestra’s string section.
The growth of the choir, as well as the quality of their work, is in no small measure due to the dedication and expertise of its first Musical Director, Pam Archer.
Following Pam’s retirement earlier last year, Deirdre Sutherland offered to ‘take the baton’ so to speak. Deirdre is a singing teacher in Taree, with years of experience performing in choirs, amateur theatre and leading choirs. She also coordinates the Taree Vocal Eisteddfod. She teamed up with Maureen Larter, who is the accompanist for the choir. Maureen teaches violin and piano from her home and has years of experience performing in orchestras. Maureen is a very keen gardener, apiarist and is a published author.
